  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury

Accreditation

You can complete a short assessment at the end of the course to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider). Accreditations last for three years.

Face to Face or Online

  • The two-day in-person course has been shown to provide better learning outcomes due to interactive activities and discussions that are not possible in an online setting.
  • If you are unable to attend the two-day course in person, the online blended option is available as an alternative.

What is the MHFAider Community

MHFAider is a community focused on supporting Mental Health First Aiders beyond their training and accreditation. We provide a platform where individuals can access essential support resources, a knowledge library, and guidance from peers and Mental Health Fitness Coaches.

Our goal is to create a network of mental health first aiders who can assist those in need while promoting health awareness and resilience within our communities.

We strive to ensure that all workplaces and communities recognize the value of Mental Health First Aid as equivalent to Physical First Aid. Just as we seek help for a broken leg and support each other through recovery, we advocate for the same level of care and attention towards mental health.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults to empower participants and foster a sense of responsibility in supporting others.
  • Use an evidence-based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
  • Know the barriers to help-seeking and how to overcome these, inspiring participants to feel motivated to support others effectively.
  • Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support
  • Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatments and supports available
  • Apply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider to maintain personal well-being and ensure effective support for others

Duration & Format

The 12-hour course can be delivered in 1 of 2 ways:
- Face-to-face: 2 x 6-hour sessions over 2 days
